Statute of Liberty

Located on Liberty Island, the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the people of America and remains one one of the most powerful American symbols.
It was completed in 1884.

The Statue of Liberty is the work of the French sculptor Bartholdi with the help of Gustave Eiffel..
The American architect Richard Morris Hunt designed the base.

The Statue was exhibited in separate parts. First the right arm and the torch were shown at the Philadelphia Exhibition in 1876, then the face and the body at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1878.

On the 28th of October 1886, a great parade was organized and the world marvelled " The Liberty Lightiing the world".

The statue represents a major achievement in neo-classical style. The left hand holds the Declaration of Independence, with the historical date of the 4 July 1776, and in the right hand golden torch.
